Suspected Drivers in Fatal Hit and Run August 20 MotorCycle Accident Arrested

According to Cobb County police, they have arrested the individuals responsible for a tragic hit-and-run motorcycle crash on August 20, 2011 which left Emanuel R. Mitchell dead.  According to police, Mr.  Mitchell of Norcross, a 31-year-old riding a black 1990 Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle, was killed after being struck by two vehicles on I-75 in the southbound lanes near Windy Hill Road.

Police did not immediately release the names of the suspects, but according to the AJC, jail records showed only two people had been booked into the jail Tuesday night on vehicular homicide charges.  Brandon Michael Weston of Smyrna and Pamela Kay Rice of Marietta were the individuals booked on charges of 2nd degree vehicular homicide, hit and run, tampering with evidence and several other charges.

Sonni Smith, 23, of Atlanta, told police her Mazda 3 struck Mitchell after the driver of a silver Porsche made initial contact with Mitchell’s motorcycle. Smith, who will not be charged, said the Porsche driver fled.  Since making the statement, and based on evidence recovered at the scene of the crime, the police had been searching for a gray or silver colored 1986 to 1991 model year Porsche 944.

The popularity of motorcycling has increased in the last few years with more than 1.1 million motorcycles sold each year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council.  Sadly, the increase in ridership has resulted in an increase in motorcyclist deaths.  From 1997’s historic low, to 2006, motorcycle fatalities rose 127 percent.   On average, approximately 88,000 motorcyclists are injured in traffic crashes each year.

Oftentimes, motorcycle drivers are blamed for accidents when in fact they had nothing to do with causing the accident.  Drivers of speeding vehicles may try and pass a motor cycle and in the process clip the motor cycle which results in a crash.

Our thoughts and wishes are with Mr. Mitchell’s family at this difficult time.
