A recent study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that the use of rivaroxaban, the generic form of Xarelto, may double the risk for gastrointestinal bleeding as compared to the bleeding risk associated with warfarin.
The study was conducted to help determine the overall safety of rivaroxaban as compared with warfarin in terms of the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding as a side effect, but the researchers found the bleeding risk of Xarelto use to be more than twice that of warfarin. Gastrointestinal bleeding creates a substantial risk of serious injury and even death, making Xarelto a risky medication for those deemed to be at risk for uncontrollable bleeding events.
Why is Xarelto Prescribed?
Anticoagulants like Xarelto are widely prescribed to prevent blood clots from forming after hip or knee replacement surgery, and to treat deep vein thrombosis (DVT), atrial fibrillation, and to help prevent blood clots from re-forming.
Xarelto offers several distinct advantages over warfarin, including simplified dosing, no monitoring requirement, and fewer drug interactions. But in the event of severe bleeding, there is no known antidote for the blood thinner, unlike warfarin, which is quickly and easily reversed with vitamin K.
Bleeding Events Prompt Xarelto Lawsuits
Severe bleeding events have triggered numerous lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Bayer Corp., the manufacturers of Xarelto, alleging that the drug companies are putting patient lives at risk by failing to provide product labeling that sufficiently to warns consumers about the possibility of uncontrollable hemorrhaging caused by Xarelto use.
There are currently more than 300 Xarelto lawsuits in federal litigation in Louisiana, and another 160 pending in a mass tort proceeding in Pennsylvania. Among other allegations, the plaintiffs claim that they never would have used Xarelto had they known of the risks, and that Janssen and Bayer misled health care providers about the lack of need for follow-up testing.
